One of the hardest lessons to learn and heal from is that not every listening ear is one you can trust. Over the past 18 years, I’ve encountered painful yet necessary lessons—ones that have left scars but also wisdom.

We often attach trust to titles: pastor, childhood friend, spouse, or lover. But a title doesn’t equate to trustworthiness. Sometimes, we hold on to people God is trying to replace because they feel familiar, comfortable, or aligned with our expectations. We pour out our hearts, unaware that our vulnerability is being mishandled by those who lack the capacity to hold it with care.

And yet, in the midst of those betrayals, there are those who have been present all along. The ones who have waited patiently, offering a safe space without demand or judgment. The ones who truly listen, not just to respond, but to understand.

When your eyes are finally opened—when the scales fall away—you will see them. And when that moment comes, show gratitude. Because real connection, the kind that nourishes and uplifts, is what we were created for. We were never meant to be islands, nor to be tethered to those whose only role is to bring us down.

May you have the wisdom to recognize true listeners and the courage to let go of those who were never meant to hold your heart.
